Mountain Rwenzori hiking – 9 days

Rwenzori Mountains are located on the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwenzori National Park was gazetted in 1991. This mountain range that covers 996km2 formed after a massive uplift in the earths crust. The highest peak rises to 5109 metes at Margherita Peak with the range stretching some 120 km north/south and 48 km east/west. With 6 snow capped mountains.

Program

Day 1: Arrival transfer to Ibanda at the Foot of the Mountain Rwenzori

Day 2: Morning transfer to Nyakalengija (1646 meters) starting point

Day 3; Hike through the Kurt Sharfer Bridge to marvel at the sparkling Mubuku river confluence. Proceeding up to the John Matte hut (3415 meters)

Day 4: Ascend to the Bigo Bog via lake Bujuku Continue to a rock shelter called Cooking Pot and soon you will arrive at your final stop at the Bujuku Hut (3960 meters)

Day 5 : Ascend to Mount Victoria and Mount Speke at 4890 meters.proceed through the snow to the Elena Hut

Day 6: .Ascend to the snowy Alexander peak (5092 meters) and then onwards to the highest peak at 5109 meters, the famous Margherita!

Day 7: Descend from Lake Kitandara and continue to the Guy Yeoman hut (3260 meters)

Day 8: Descend along the Mubuku river and join the original route near the Bujuku river. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba Hut (2650 meters).

Day 9: Today we descend to Nyakalengija the park headquarters which will take approximately 2-3 hours. Then we proceed to Kampala.

Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala –Mountain Rwenzori National Park

After Breakfast pick up and transfer to Kasese. The Journey will take about 5 hours through Mubende District with a lunch stop in Fort Portal before Heading to Ibanda at the Foot of the Rwenzori for your Accommodation at RMS headquarters / Rwenzori Base camp.

DAY 2: START OF THE EQUATOR GLACIERS TOUR
Early in the morning transfer to Nyakalengija the Rwenzori Mountaineering services (1646 meters) where you will start your climb into the mountains. The hike takes you along the Mubuku River and through thick equatorial vegetation before arriving at the Nyabitaba hut (8700ft / 2650 meters). You might hear chimpanzees or see blue monkeys. Dinner and overnight in Nyabitaba hut. Total hiking time: 5-7 hours Ascent: 1200 meters

Day 3: JOHN MATTE HUT
After early breakfast you will start the hike from Nyabitaba hut through the Kurt Sharfer Bridge marvel at the sparkling Mubuku river confluence, from this point the surface is steep and slippery. In the afternoon you will reach the Nyamuleju hut from where you might enjoy a nice view at Mount Stanley and Speke. Climb through the open patches, lobelia, and heath moss forest when proceeding up to the John Matte hut (11200ft / 3415 meters) for overnight.Total hiking time: 7 hours

Day 4: BUJUKU HUT
Depart early from John Matte through the giant Lobelias and heath trees crossing River Bujuku. You ascend to the Bigo Bog and scenic landscape of lobelias and giant groundsels up to lake Bujuku overlooking Mt. Baker and speke to the north. Continue to a rock shelter called Cooking Pot and soon you will arrive at your final day stop . Dinner and overnight at the Bujuku Hut (13000 ft / 3960 meters). Total hiking time: 3-5 hours Ascent: 560 meters

Day 5 : ELENA HUT
Head off from Bujuku Hut valley and hike to Scott Elliot leading to Elena Hut this trail leads you through scenic alpine vegetation consisting Giant Groundsels and Lobelia and continue to ascend Mount Victoria and Mount Speke and through the lovely views of the Savoia and Elena glaciers, scale further through to the Scott Elliott and proceed through the snow to the Elena Hut (4560 meters) for overnight rest. The Elena Hut will be your base for the final conquer of the Rwenzori Mountains to climb Mt Stanley or Margherita peak (16763 ft /5109m)

Day 6: THE FINAL ASCENT to Margherita peak (16763 ft /5109m) 
Early morning ascent to the snowy Alexander peak (5092 meters) and then onwards to the famous Margherita the highest peak at 5109 meters. Thereafter we directly descend to the beautiful lake Kitandara for overnight stay at Kitandara hut (4020 meters). the hike takes about: 3-5 hours Ascent: 670 meters – Descent: 1090 meters

Day 7: DESCEND UP TO GUY YEOMAN HUT
After early breakfast a long descent begins. First we climb from Lake Kitandara to the Fresh field Pass from where you can look into the neighboring country Congo and on clear days you will see big area of Congo and the famous tropical forests of Congo. Descend up to Guy Yeoman Hut (10700ft/3261m). We will have a picnic lunch on the way and continue our journey while descending to the Guy Yeoman hut for dinner and overnight. Total descending time: 5-7 hours (1000 meters)

Day 8: DESCEND TO NYABITABA HUT
This last part of the journey is long and may be difficult of deep mud and river crossing.! Descend very steeply along the Mubuku river and join the original route near the Bujuku river. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba Hut (2650 meters) or You meet your driver to drive you back to Kasese town to the hotel for warm showers and relax. Dinner and overnight.

Day 9: KASESE
After breakfast drive to Kampala or Entebbe in case your flight connections.

End of hiking
